MINNEAPOLIS (July 19, 2022) – With rising gas and food prices and a 7 percent increase in the cost of school supplies, many families in the Greater Twin Cities – especially people experiencing poverty – are struggling to make ends meet. Greater Twin Cities United Way and the Minnesota Vikings are teaming up to ease that burden by hosting “Action Day 2022.” On July 21, 1,500 volunteers will gather at U.S. Bank Stadium to pack backpacks full of school supplies for 50,000 local K-12 students.
“Action Day is United Way’s signature volunteer event of the year, and one of the many ways we partner with the community to support our youth from cradle to career,” said John Wilgers, President and CEO, Greater Twin Cities United Way. “Thanks to changemakers across our region, thousands of local students will head back to school ready to thrive.”
“As students prepare to head back to school, the Vikings are proud to partner with Greater Twin Cities United Way and other Minnesota professional sports teams to help provide those students with the tools they need to achieve success in the classroom,” said Vikings Vice President of Social Impact Brett Taber. “It is truly inspiring to have so many volunteers from our team and across the community come to our home at U.S. Bank Stadium to make a positive impact.”
Over 100 of United Way’s nonprofit and school district partners will pick up the backpacks filled with supplies from U.S. Bank Stadium and distribute them to students in the region.
United Way partnered with 16 company sponsors and all seven of Minnesota’s pro-sports teams to make Action Day 2022 possible.
