The events of 2020 have been difficult for all of us, particularly for people experiencing poverty as well as Black, Indigenous and People of Color (BIPOC). COVID-19 and the outrage and riots that stemmed from the murder of George Floyd have challenged our communities in ways we couldn’t have imagined – yet, they also have spurred unprecedented and inspiring generosity and goodwill.

Greater Twin Cities United Way has been a pillar of our community for more than 100 years and, thanks to the generosity of donors like you, we will continue to be here for our community. Our vision is a united community where all thrive, regardless of income, race or place – work that has become more important amidst ongoing racial inequities that have caused disparities for so many years.

We’ve seen positive impact when we work together to pool our gifts of time, talent and treasure. Now more than ever, our community needs your support.

Call to Action

Across the U.S., we’ve heard stories of philanthropists challenging each other to give more this year. Several of our donors have graciously donated their federal stimulus checks. For those who itemize, when you make a charitable contribution of cash to a qualifying public charity, in 2020, under the CARES Act, you can deduct up to 100 percent of your adjusted gross income. (Note: This is not tax or legal advice. Please consult your tax advisor.) There’s even a national movement among some donors with Donor Advised Funds (DAFs) to give “half my DAF” to charity.

Collectively, the philanthropic community can make an immense, positive impact on the lives of millions of people. We’re seeing this in response to COVID-19, as our donors have given over $4.5 million in emergency relief funding as well as $2.6 million to help rebuild the Twin Cities as a result of the riots.

What if instead of the typical IRS-minimum of 5 percent, family foundations gave 10 or 20 percent in 2020? What if you could make a deeper impact by giving more this year through your DAF?

A Greater Twin Cities United Way donor recently shared that he plans to give more from his family foundation this year, noting that he and his wife plan to give significantly as “this is the year to invest more deeply in recovery efforts.”

Now is the time to consider giving more than the minimum required by the IRS rules. Our community needs us.

Our work is only possible because of your generosity, and we appreciate it deeply. If you’re interested in increasing your gift this year, please contact your Greater Twin Cities United Way relationship manager or call 612-340-7444.
